Herdade Grande

An agricultural property within 5 km of Vidigueira, whose project covers 65 hectares of vineyard, 65ha of olive grove and the remaining 65ha intended for the grazing of sheep.

History

It has been owned by the same family for nearly a century, acquired in 1921, when the vine and the olive were present cultures associated with each other. The current owner, António Lança, was born here. He has a degree in Agricultural Engineering from the Higher Institute of Agronomy since 1970, and is manager and producer of the company’s wines.
The company’s management is ensured by the daughter and colleague Mariana, with a Master’s degree in Viticulture and Enology, whose youthfulness and commitment constitute a determining factor in the monitoring of the internal and external market and guarantee the company’s continuity and the quality of its wines.
Together with adjoining properties the estate is home to a Tourist Game Reserve, with 750 hectares.
The wine project began with the installation of vineyards in 1980 and the vinification in 1997, was aimed to produce and sell 350,000 to 400,000 bottles of wine, 30% White and 70% Red, a goal that has already been achieved.
In 2008 the marketing of olive oil from our olives began, with the Herdade Grande brand.

Concept / Philosophy (company and products)

The rich soils and the exposure of our vineyards to the East as well as the winery’s location, has unique features for obtaining distinct and elegant wines. Herdade Grande seeks to combine new winemaking knowledge with traditional methods of vinification and technology, in order to obtain a final product that translates the good quality of the grapes.
We bet on quality, from the grape to the bottle. We market the brands ”Herdade Grande”, ”Condado das Vinhas”, “Monte das Talhas” and “Audaz”.

The 65 ha of vineyards are made up of a wide variety of national and international castes since 1980, carefully selected in regard to their adaptability to the “terroir” in order to preserve the typical characteristics of Alentejo wines. In more recent times, new planting of vines have been made to ensure the maintenance of the profile and quality of the wines that are placed on the market, namely the Vidigueira whites. Without neglecting the typicality of Alentejo wines and the HG “terroir”. Furthermore, we are still investing in new ways to present wine with other characteristics that may surprise consumers. An example of this are the ranges: HG Gerações White (Verdelho & Alvarinho) and Red and the Reserve White since the year 2012.

The current wine varieties are as follows:

Red Grape Castes: Aragonese, Alicante B., Trincadeira, Syrah, Tourigas Nacional and Franca, Alfrocheiro, Tinta Grossa, Tinta Caiada, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tinta Miúda and Souzão.

White Grape Castes: Antão Vaz, Alvarinho, Arinto, Chardonnay, Perrum, Rabigato, Roupeiro, Rabo de Ovelha, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillion, Viosinho and Viognier.

Our HG wines and olive oil are marketed from north to south of the country through the distributor Decante Vinhos, Lda – and can also be found in major supermarkets, liquor stores and restaurants.
The export represents a 60% share of the company’s sales – Brazil, Angola, Peru, China, United States, Canada, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland and others.
Our Enotourism is open from Monday to Friday and by prior appointment on weekends and/or bank holidays.
We accept and can organize various events, namely corporate meetings, sales conventions, birthday parties, Christmas celebrations and tours for both Groups and Companies.
